With more than 25 years of experience in marketing communication and magazine journalism, I bring a unique perspective to every assignment.
After earning a bachelor's in English and environmental science from Allegheny College and a master's in magazine journalism from Syracuse University, I gained early work experience as a technical writer and marketing copywriter for consulting engineers and software developers.
I became a freelance writer in 1989 to help professional service firms develop dynamic print materials. Over a six-year period, I wrote dozens of articles for trade and corporate magazines, helped launch five newsletters, and researched and wrote targeted marketing brochures.
In 1995, I joined EXPO magazine as editor-in-chief to report on the meeting and convention industry. I also wrote online content for the launch of EXPOweb, produced the magazine's first technology issue and developed a guide to industry Web sites as an advertising supplement.
Following my interest in the Web, I became a senior content developer for HNTB's Technology Group in 1997 to work on Web sites, interactive multimedia programs and digital video productions. I led development of two award-winning Web sites.
In February 1999, I relaunched my freelance business with an emphasis on writing for the Web. I now spend most of my time writing trend stories, case studies, how-to articles and technology reviews. When I’m not writing by-lined articles, I edit technical reports and ghostwrite white papers for technologists, engineers and architects to help articulate their thought leadership.
What I enjoy most is learning about Internet marketing trends and applying what I’ve learned on e-mail campaigns, e-newsletters, and Web site content development.
Some people think freelance means "looking for a job." Nothing could be further from the truth. Freelancing gives me the freedom to work on diverse projects. It's never routine! Since 1999, I've completed more than 215 assignments for 75 individuals in 35 organizations.
I am now based in the San Francisco East Bay area and belong to the San Francisco Chapter of the International Association of Business Communicators (SF/IABC), as well as the East Bay I.T. Group. I moderate the SF/IABC Independent Communicators Roundtable and volunteer with Taproot Foundation.
